Lydia
Baxter was born in Petersburg New York on September 8, 1809.
She
and her sister became Christians at an early age. She later married Colonel John C. Baxter and
moved to New York City. She was a
devoted worker for the cause of Christ, until a severe illness left her
bedridden.
The Baxter home became a gathering place for Christian workers. She once told friends that despite her health problems she “had the name of Jesus. When the tempter tries to make me blue or despondent, I mention the name of Jesus, and he can’t’ get through to me anymore.”
In
1870, Lydia wrote the text to Take the name of Jesus with You. It was set to
music and published by William H. Doane and has remained in constant use.
Take The Name Of Jesus With You
Verse
1
Take
the name of Jesus with you
Child
of sorrow and of woe
It
will joy and comfort give you
Take
it then where'er you go
Verse
2
Take
the name of Jesus ever
As
a shield from every snare
If
temptations round you gather
Breathe
that holy name in prayer
O
the precious name of Jesus
How
it thrills our souls with joy
When
his loving arms receive us
And
his songs our tongues employ
Verse
4
At
the name of Jesus bowing
Falling
prostrate at his feet
King
of kings in Heaven we'll crown him
When
our journey is complete
Chorus
Precious
name O how sweet
Hope
of earth and joy of Heaven
Precious
name O how sweet
Hope
of earth and joy of Heaven
